The show is comprised of nine small to medium format works depicting figures frozen mid-action in ambiguous spaces carved out by expressionist light and colour. Semmer’s tone alternates rapidly between merriment and menace.

These paintings are informed by such diverse sources as Goya’s images of witchcraft, 19th Century illustrations of female hysteria, Neue Sachlichkeit and Magic Realism, the German teen-mag Bravo and Winsor McCay’s turn of the century comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend (to mention only a few).

Babette Semmer is a recent graduate of Amy Sillman and Monika Baer’s class at Städelschule in Frankfurt.
